What we are looking for - Job Purpose
We are looking for a highly motivated breeder for the crops Tomato Bush and Tomato Rootstock. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of phytopathologists, geneticists, and biostatisticians which is led by an Integrated Breeding Team Lead. As a breeder, you report directly to the Head of R&D EMEA South, and you will manage a small team of breeding specialists and/or technicians yourself.

Your primary responsibility is to develop a commercial Tomato Bush as well as Tomato Rootstock pipeline of innovative varieties. You will develop and execute effective breeding strategies and combine available digital tools as well as novel plant breeding technologies to accelerate the product pipeline. With a strong sense of customer focus, you target your varieties to market segments around the globe that are carefully selected with colleagues from the Marketing and Sales Department.

To ensure a proper follow up in terms of selections, screenings and product evaluations in the key global market segments, this job requires extensive travel (about 35% of your time) across Europe, the Middle East (Iran, Egypt, Jordan) and South America (Chile, Brazil).

What are your major Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Ensure a constant flow of commercially successful varieties that meet the Company Crop Strategy and consumer needs, by applying proven conventional breeding techniques in combination with new technologies.
  • Develop and maintain a well-planned and balanced breeding program that provides commercial products for key markets in accordance with company business objectives and market needs.
  • Establish, design, and implement specific breeding targets for each market segment based on Crop Strategy.
  • Partner with Regional Product Specialist and Regional Crop Lead to translate Crop Strategies and tactics into new commercial products to gain Market Share and Leadership in key market segments.
  • Stay in touch with developments in plant breeding technology and introduce innovation to the breeding programs where appropriate.
  • Prepare, implement, and monitor crop budgets and operational plans for the breeding program across a network of breeding stations and hybrid screening sites
  • Manage and maximize the use of all resources allocated to the breeding program(s): human, technical, budget/financial.
  • Create a highly motivated breeding team where teamwork and trust are key values. Manage and develop the team of Specialist and Technician Breeding by coaching them on the job and on their behavior, taking responsibility for their personal development including training, career planning and personal development by using HR guidelines and procedures and by executing the processes of Performance and merit reviews. Focus on strengths to stimulate personal and group excellence.
  • Provide leadership in all assigned tasks, including strategic collaborations with key stakeholders, both internal and external.

Your education, work experiences and skills

  • M.Sc. (>5 years) or PhD (>3 years) in plant breeding, genetics, agronomy, horticulture or related field
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in a commercial breeding program, or five years of professional experience in plant breeding
  • Proficient in English, and preferably in Italian
  • Strong background in plant breeding, genetics, experimental design and statistical analysis
  • Demonstrated success in the application of genomics or molecular markers to operational breeding programs.
  • Proficiency in quantitative genetics, data management and statistic al analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work and provide leadership on cross-functional multidisciplinary teams, effective communication skills.
  • Proven relationship builder at all levels including company owners, decision makers and senior influencers.
  • Excellent managerial and organizational skills; ability to balance multiple tasks and achieve milestones.
  • Experience in People Management and Budgeting
  • Computer skills (data management, management information systems, databases, spread sheets, statistical software)
  • Excellent communication skills; Team player
  • Strong interpersonal skills; assertive, collaborative, persuasive, influencing, entrepreneurial
